Discover The Local History At The Lighthouses

Marking the most southwesterly point of the Australian mainland, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse was built in 1895 and boasts spectacular views across the coast where the Indian and Southern Oceans. Head further north and you’ll find the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, with an easy climb to the top of its tower rewarding you with awe-inspiring panoramas over the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and Geographe Bay.

Explore The Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park

Wedged between the two lighthouses sprawls the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, which encompasses magnificent tracts of karri forest, peppermint trees and banksias. Its rugged coastline stretches 120 kilometres and includes the unique granite formations of Sugarloaf Rock and Canal Rocks, as well as outstanding surf breaks at Yallingup and Smiths Beach. While exploring the beaches and hiking trails (such as the long-distance Cape to Cape Track), keep your eyes peeled for southern brown bandicoots, brush wallabies and emus that inhabit the area.

Venture Into The Subterranean Caves

Hidden beneath the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park are more than 150 limestone caves, some of which are open to visitors for both guided and self-guided tours. Don’t miss a visit to the immense Mammoth Cave where a 50,000-year-old jawbone of an extinct Zygomaturus lies embedded in the wall or the magnificent Lake Cave that’s renowned for its “suspended table” – a stunning crystal decoration that hangs from the ceiling.

Discover The Local Gastronomy

With its bounty of wineries, it was only a matter of time before Margaret River’s culinary scene started making its mark and with events like the Margaret River Gourmet Escape on the calendar, it’s no longer a secret. But even if your visit doesn’t coincide with this November festival, there are plenty of outstanding restaurants, cafes and artisan producers to discover that are open year-round.
