Taking place from 15 September to 14 October this year, Floriade is a celebration of all things spring, with live music, cultural celebrations and (of course) magnificent floral designs. (Its name is actually inspired by the Latin word floriat that means to design with flowers.) Think seas of tulips and towering sunflowers, along with workshops for green thumbs, pop-up markets and family-friendly recreational activities.
It was established in 1988 as a one-off event to mark Australia’s Bicentenary and the 75th anniversary of Canberra but was so popular that it’s continued as an annual festival. Today it’s not just the floral displays that punters come to see but also intricately decorated gnomes on the Floriade Gnome Gnoll and art exhibitions featuring some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
After being inspired by the horticultural displays, take time to visit Canberra’s sights, including the boomerang-shaped Parliament House that overlooks the shores of Lake Burley Griffin and Old Parliament House that now houses the Museum of Australian Democracy. If you’re traveling with kids, head to the outstanding Questacon National Science and Technology Centre to get hands-on with their innovative exhibits or visit the National Museum of Australia to learn about the Gold Rush era and Australia’s indigenous cultures.
Art enthusiasts shouldn’t miss a visit to the National Gallery of Australia where the country’s largest art collection is held, including an outstanding number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works. Canberra’s also home to the National Portrait Gallery of Australia where you can see some of the country’s biggest names recreated on canvas.
Be sure to pay your respects at the Australian War Memorial, a Byzantine-inspired landmark that commemorates those who lost their lives fighting for the country during wars. Learn more about Australia’s role in armed conflicts around the world at the on-site museum or wander the collection of vintage aircraft on display.
